Switzerland continues to confirm its position as one of the world’s leading biotech hubs. Beyond the strong national figures published in the Swiss Biotech Report 2026, the report also reflects the importance of regional ecosystems such as Valais, where industrial capacity, applied research and innovation are closely connected.
Published during the Swiss Biotech Day in Basel by the Swiss Biotech Association, the report highlights another strong year for the Swiss biotech sector in 2025:
- CHF 7.5 billion in revenues (+4.2% vs. 2024)
- CHF 2.5 billion invested in R&D
- CHF 2.6 billion raised in financing
- More than 21,000 biotech jobs across Switzerland
These results confirm the resilience and maturity of the Swiss biotech industry, despite a challenging international financial environment. Switzerland remains one of Europe’s most competitive life sciences locations, combining research excellence, industrial know-how and access to global markets.
Valais as part of Switzerland’s biotech value chain
While the report provides a national overview, biotech innovation is also driven by strong regional ecosystems. Valais is one of them.
The canton benefits from a unique combination of industrial infrastructure, applied research and innovation support. Major production and development sites such as Lonza in Visp, ten23 health, Debiopharm Research & Manufacturing, TRB Chemedica and ExcellGene contribute to the region’s growing visibility in bioproduction and pharmaceutical development.
At the heart of this innovative ecosystem in Valais, led by the Fondation the Ark are the BioArk Tech Parks, dedicated to life sciences innovation in Valais. Active in Monthey and Visp, BioArk acts as a scale-up bridge for earl-stage projects as well as for established companies in biotech, medtech and related sectors. Through infrastructure, support services and connections with industry and academia, BioArk helps companies move from innovation to industrial application.
Applied research and talent development
Valais also benefits from the expertise of the HES-SO Valais/Wallis. Through its life sciences education programmes and applied research institutes, the university of applied sciences contributes to talent development and industry collaboration within the regional ecosystem.
The proximity between companies, research and innovation support structures facilitates technology transfer and the development of applied projects aligned with industrial needs.
A coordinated regional strategy
The active participation of Economic Promotion Valais at Swiss Biotech Day, alongside the Service de l’économie, du tourisme et de l’innovation (SETI), BioArk and HES-SO Valais/Wallis, reflects the canton’s ambition to strengthen its position in life sciences, particularly in bioproduction, pharmaceutical development, applied research and industrial transfer.
This dynamic fits into a broader Swiss landscape highlighted by the Swiss Biotech Report 2026, where competitiveness increasingly relies on strong regional ecosystems connected to international networks. In this context, Valais continues to strengthen its role within Switzerland’s life sciences value chain.
