Lugaia: Growth in Raron, and a long-term commitment to Valais

In Raron, Lugaia operates in a demanding niche: flexible single-use containment solutions for the pharmaceutical, chemical and biotech industries.

Founded in 2006, the Valais-based company develops and manufactures film-based technical systems to secure transfer, packaging and handling operations for sensitive or highly active substances. It is a discreet field, but a critical one. In these environments, product purity, operator protection and regulatory compliance leave little room for error.

Twenty years after its beginnings, Lugaia now employs around 60 people and generates more than CHF 20 million in annual revenue. Around 40% of its business is generated in Switzerland, with 60% coming from exports, mainly to Europe and the United States.

From a garage to a global niche market

Lugaia’s story began with a simple idea: designing practical, robust solutions adapted to the real needs of industrial customers. Viktor Schnyder started processing plastic films in a garage in Raron.

That technical foundation became the company’s core.

Today, Lugaia supplies containment and packaging systems used in closed processes, particularly for sensitive or highly active substances. Its solutions address a precise need: reducing contamination risks, protecting operators and limiting complex cleaning procedures, which are often time-consuming to qualify in GMP environments.

The market remains narrow. Few players offer complete solutions in this segment. Lugaia has established itself through a combination of technical specialisation, controlled production and the ability to develop customised products.

Solutions designed for regulated environments

Lugaia’s portfolio includes several product families: continuous liner systems, transferbag systems, safeflex isolator systems and safeseal closure systems.

These solutions are developed for transfer, sealing, packaging and containment applications in pharmaceutical, biotech and chemical environments. They are manufactured in ISO 5, ISO 7 and ISO 8 cleanrooms, on dedicated conversion lines.

Technical precision is central.

The safeseal system, for example, can achieve an OEB 5 containment level, below 1 µg/m³, when used with Lugaia films. Continuous liner systems can reach film lengths of up to 80 metres, with diameters ranging from 190 to 700 mm depending on the application.

These specifications serve a clear industrial purpose: securing repetitive operations, reducing open handling steps and making integration easier with existing interfaces, including RTP systems.

Quality, traceability and Swiss production

Lugaia’s value proposition also relies on its quality system.

The company produces its solutions under controlled conditions, with documentation, traceability and validated processes. Its quality management system is based in particular on ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 15378:2017, the latter being especially relevant for manufacturers of primary packaging materials for the pharmaceutical industry.

This industrial discipline explains part of its international positioning.

In life sciences, a supplier’s value is not measured only by product performance. It also depends on its ability to document, reproduce, qualify and adapt solutions in regulated environments.

Growth in Raron – and a long-term commitment to Valais

Lugaia’s trajectory also illustrates a broader issue for industrial Valais: how can specialised companies born in the region continue to grow while remaining anchored locally?

Lugaia continues to expand its operations in Raron, where its existing site is reaching its expansion limits. In March 2026, Valais Economy reported that the ongoing expansion of cleanroom capacity represented the last possible extension on the current site, making the search for additional industrial space a strategic issue for the company.

No new site has been publicly announced so far. However, Lugaia has since made its longer-term intentions clear: strengthening the company’s location in Valais is one of its stated priorities for the coming years.

The company’s continued growth is already visible in its workforce. Lugaia now reports around 60 employees across production, administration, logistics, sales, marketing, engineering and quality management.

For advanced manufacturing and life sciences companies, access to scalable infrastructure can determine the next phase of development. In Lugaia’s case, the challenge is therefore not simply to grow, but to create the conditions for that growth while maintaining the industrial expertise built up in Upper Valais over the past two decades.

The United States already plays an important role in Lugaia’s business, with a branch established there. This presence confirms the weight of the North American market for pharmaceutical containment solutions.

2026, a year of international visibility

In 2026, Lugaia is also maintaining a strong presence at international industry events.

Between January and June, the company announced its participation in several specialised events, including Pharmapack in Paris, Making Pharma in Barcelona, INTERPHEX in New York, the HPAPI Summit in Milan, SafeBridge in Philadelphia and Expoquimia in Barcelona.

This presence is not only about commercial visibility. It confirms the company’s international orientation in markets where containment, operator safety and GMP compliance requirements continue to increase.

A relevant case for the Valais ecosystem

Lugaia’s journey is relevant for BioArk because it shows a concrete facet of the Valais life sciences ecosystem: the ability to develop, retain and scale highly specialised industrial expertise.

Lugaia was supported in its early stages by the Foundation The Ark. Since then, it has followed its own trajectory, with international growth and progressive operational continuity. After two decades leading the company, Viktor Schnyder completed a management buyout. Ownership was transferred to long-standing members of the management team, while he remains involved at board level.

This continuity matters.

In a sector where trust is built over time, Lugaia combines three strong dimensions: niche expertise, controlled Swiss production and the ability to serve international customers from Upper Valais. Its stated ambition to strengthen its long-term presence in Valais adds another dimension to that story: ensuring that international growth can continue from the ecosystem where the company was created.
