EPFL expands its “Les sciences, ça m’intéresse!” program to Valais, offering engaging science activities for children aged 7 to 16.
A Collaborative Effort to Promote STEM
The science discovery program “Les sciences, ça m’intéresse!” has now been introduced in Valais, thanks to a partnership between EPFL’s Science Outreach Department, EPFL Valais Wallis, the Canton of Valais, and UBS. This initiative aims to spark interest in science and technology among young people through an active and playful pedagogical approach.
Addressing Switzerland’s STEM Shortage
The program responds to Switzerland’s growing need for specialists in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology (MINT) fields. By engaging children before they make educational choices, the initiative aims to inform, introduce, and encourage them to pursue STEM careers. This early exposure is crucial for developing the next generation of skilled professionals in these critical areas.
Fostering Scientific Literacy and Inclusivity
Beyond career preparation, the program contributes to broader scientific literacy and inclusivity. It offers a wide range of activities, including workshops during school hours and extracurricular events on weekends and holidays. The initiative particularly focuses on encouraging girls, who are underrepresented in STEM fields. By providing hands-on experiences and opportunities to interact with scientists, the program aims to cultivate creativity, scientific thinking, and a deeper understanding of STEM subjects among Valais youth.
