Valais start-up GaDia is launching an innovative test that can detect carbapenem-resistant bacteria in just 15 minutes. This fast and accurate solution could be a game-changer for hospital and private laboratories.
GaDia, based at the BioArk technological site in Monthey, continues to innovate in the field of rapid diagnostic testing. Its new product can identify five types of carbapenemases, enzymes produced by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These are classified as an urgent threat by global health authorities.
With the rise of resistant bacteria, traditional diagnostic methods, which are lengthy and costly, are showing their limitations. ‘Our test reduces the analysis time to 15 minutes, compared to several hours or even days with conventional techniques,’ explains Percevent Ducrest, founder of GaDia. Based on lateral flow assay technology (similar to COVID tests), it offers 94-100% accuracy.
Designed for hospital and private laboratories, this test meets a growing need. ‘Tenders are multiplying in Europe as hospitals seek reliable and cost-effective solutions,’ he adds.
A niche strategy
GaDia stands out by positioning itself in specific markets, far from massive competition. ‘We don’t do consumer testing, but we target segments where expertise is key,’ emphasises Percevent Ducrest.
Manufactured entirely in Valais, these tests are competitively priced despite their high quality. ‘Our entire value chain is controlled locally. We even work with students and retirees to strengthen our team,’ he explains.
Outlook and recognition
Several successful tenders in Europe confirm the test’s potential. ‘We have contracts ranging from 100 tests to 100,000 over six years,’ reveals the founder. These successes are enabling GaDia to consider new recruitment and investments, particularly in European IVDR certification.
This project also illustrates the start-up’s resilience. ‘It hasn’t been easy every day, but today we are proving that hard work pays off,’ concludes Percevent Ducrest, grateful to partners such as The Ark and CimArk.
With this new test, GaDia confirms its place among the innovative players in healthcare in Valais… and far beyond.
